Welcome to Birdie's Story - the Heart behind Betsy's Flower Truck

We searched far and wide for the perfect truck.  It’s been a long-time dream to own a classic Volkswagen bus.  So, when this one popped up for sale in Fort Worth, TX, we jumped on it right away!  She is a 1965 VW Single Cab Transporter. We named her Birdie Mae!

Now that we found her, our next step was to hop on a plane to see her in person.  As soon as we saw her, we knew, she was the one!  Birdie Mae!  Next was the research and more research and even more research on classic VWs.  Thanks to my newfound friends at thesamba.com, I was able to learn all about my new 1965 VW Single Cab.

Birdie remained in Texas for a bit for a few repairs.  After all, she is over sixty years old!  My new friends at The Bug Stop handled everything to ensure she was ready for her new adventure!

Next up was shipping! Birdie’s days of cross-country road trips are behind her, so she was transported up to Idaho.

Next up, auto body!  Birdie has been a hard-working truck for many years, so she was due a little TLC!  Thanks to my new friends at Houser Auto Body in Garden City, her gates were brought back to life!

Now it was time to build her canopy supports. I wanted to keep this as true to the original style as possible.  My friends on thesamba.com helped out here again.  They were very kind and sent us detailed plans on how to make the wood supports.  They came out perfect!

Next on the list, hoops!  These were a bit trickier as her original hoops were long gone.  Back to thesamba.com for guidance!  The VW village came through and I was able to order new custom hoops (just a tad shorter than original to ensure she can still fit in our garage!).

Now on the to canopy or tilt, as it is known in the VW world.  Tilts were originally made from canvas, but we opted for something a bit more durable.  The guys over at The Cover Shop in Meridian came through big time!  They made a nearly identical canopy as her original (with a little extra reinforcement).

Now it was our turn to put in the work.  My family and I built custom risers for her flower containers and wired her up for her very own lights.  She's fancy! :)

We love our Birdie Mae!  It was so much fun bringing her back to life.  Yep, she still has a few dings and scratches, but that's exactly how we like it!  She's staying true to her history! Be sure to follow us on FB and IG to see where she will be next!
